Welcome!

National Junior Honor Society

September 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Deal School is proud to announce that we are a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). We recently met with your child’s class to discuss this great organization and to inform your child about the opportunity to be eligible to apply in 6th and 7th grade.  According to the NJHS, the purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage good citizenship in the students of secondary schools. All policies and procedures for NJHS chapters are based on the provisions of The National Constitution.

The advisers for the NJHS at The Deal School are Ms. Curcione and Ms. Lucarelli, as well as the Faculty Council including Ms.Puglisi, Dr. Cicci, and Mrs. Resto, Mrs. Ritter, and Mr. McMichael. All members have reviewed the guidelines for acceptance into this organization.

Eligibility Requirements

Students, who are currently in 6th or 7th grade in the 2022-2023 school year, will have the opportunity to be considered for membership into the NJHS after the conclusion of the second marking period of 2022-2023 school year.  Students considered for membership must have a cumulative grade point average of 92 or above in their Language Arts, Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies classes for both the first and second marking periods.  Students who met the cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the first marking period, and who are meeting the grade point average at the conclusion of the second marking period will receive a letter and a candidate form from the Deal School NJHS Faculty Council offering them an opportunity to apply to the Honor Society in the winter of 2023.

Service and Leadership Forms

In addition to a student’s grades, acceptance to the NJHS, also includes demonstrating service and leadership. Therefore, once the student has been offered a candidate form from the Faculty Council they must have documentation from the supervisor or public official responsible for the program in which the student served.  Please use forms prepared by the NJHS Faculty Council.  The forms provide detailed information for service and leadership requirements.  These forms can be found on the Deal School website or outside of Mrs. Curcione’s classroom.

A Deal School NJHS Service Form can serve as documentation for service activities.  The Service Form(s) must be filled out and returned with the completed candidate form should your child receive one in the winter.  It is highly suggested that if the student is not currently involved with a volunteer or service program, that they seek out opportunities throughout the fall.

A Deal School NJHS Leadership Form can serve as documentation for leadership positions/activities held in the school, community, or work activities.  The Leadership Form(s) must be filled out and returned with the completed candidate form should your child receive one in the winter.

The Deal School is proud to be a part of the national organization.  We are obligated to conform to the expectations established by the NJHS, and we are looking forward to reviewing all applications in the fall.  For more information about The National Junior Honor Society, please visit www.njhs.us.

Sincerely,

Mr. Donato Saponaro/Superintendent
